Total Equipment Company (TEC) has custom-engineered Instrument Air Compressor Buildings for customers in our region for more than ten years.  With extensive machine and fabrication capabilities in house, TEC staff mounts complete compressed air systems to steel decks, followed by roof and side paneling assembly.  Each building is engineered-to-order, compliant with seismic and wind loads to area classification, delivering instrument air standard-compliant compressed air.

Recently, a Pittsburgh-based midstream operator took on a major project to convert nine separate compression sites from natural gas to compressed air.  For years, these compression sites powered their pneumatic pumps with natural gas for bulk fluid transfer, or hydrate injection and dehydration processes.  In order to eliminate the use of natural gas, these systems are converting to compressed air powered devices.  Total Equipment was determined to fulfill the needs of this project requiring minimal on-site labor, a reliable installation outside area classified boundaries, tight construction schedules, plus commissioning and operating service support.

TEC and the midstream operator decided to install nine Instrument Air Compressor Buildings, one for each site.  Each building includes two Ingersoll Rand RS Series rotary screw air compressors with advanced controls and communications, desiccant dryers with dewpoint demand purge control and zero-loss condensate drain valves.  The enclosed buildings provide compressed air at a safe distance from classified areas, protect the compressed air systems from ambient temperatures, plus entry doors and removable access panels allow for easy service and installation.

“This project demonstrates Total Equipment Company’s capabilities to deliver reliable, custom-engineered solutions to complex applications, and our commitment to helping customers reduce their carbon footprint without compromising safety, efficiency or productivity in their operations,” said Chuck Gerbe, Sr. Account Manager for TEC.  “Engineering these systems in-house allows for easy shipping, minimal on-site labor and installation times, and a unique, custom-built solution best suited to the customer’s needs.”

The midstream operator, with the help of Total Equipment Company, will now power pneumatics pumps with compressed air instead of natural gas at nine sites.

For operation within the United States, there are only 2 primary pump standards: ANSI B73 and API-610

The American National Standards Institute ANSI B73 standard for Chemical Process Pumps was established in 1973. The American Petroleum Institute API-610 was primarily established for refinery service.

The single most common application for chemical dosing pumps and systems is for the treatment of water.  Water available to industry contains substances which can vary widely in types and amounts.  The types of impurities found in water can be broadly classified as 1) Dissolved solids, 2) Suspended solids and 3) Dissolved gases.

All water contains varying concentrations of dissolved salts that dissociate in water to form charge particles called ions.  The positively charged ions are called cations and the negatively charged ions are called anions.  Common forms of cations are calcium, magnesium and sodium.  Common forms of anions are sulfate, chloride and bicarbonates.

Hydrovar drives distributed by Total Equipment Company is an intelligent pump controller that combines a variable frequency drive and a programmable logic controller in one compact package.

It easily mounts directly on the motor of the pump and will fit on any standard TEFC NEMA motor.  There is no need for an external control panel. It can accommodate both new and retrofit pump installations.  It comes with a clip-and-work mounting that further simplifies the direct motor mounting process.

The start-up menu walks you through every step of the Hydrovar’s commissioning process and it has a large LCD display that shows and expanded range of parameters on each page, making it faster and easier to set-up.  The drives are also pre-programmed with patented pump specific software, designed for centrifugal pumps and systems requiring constant pressure, flow control or differential pressure in commercial and municipal applications. They match the pump output to a wide range of system conditions while protecting the pump, the motor and the pumping system.

Goulds Water Technology made Hydrovar easy to electronically integrate with your existing building management system.  It comes standard with BACnet capability and offers the convenience of wireless communication through an optional WiFi card.  What’s more, the drive’s I/O capabilities can be significantly expanded with the addition of the premium card option.
